Faster, Cheaper, Flawless – MOM by ISRO

On Wednesday 24 September, at 7.41 am, India became the first country ever to successfully place its indigenously built Mars bound spacecraft, MOM (Mars Orbiter Mission), in Martian orbit, in a maiden attempt.

With this achievement, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) joins an elite club of space agencies to have successfully launched a mission to Mars. Namely:

  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), USA
  • Russian Federal Space Agency (RFSA)
  • European Space Agency (ESA).

What makes the MOM unique is that it was achieved on a shoe-string budget of about Rs 4.5 billion ($74 million). Compare this with NASA’s MAVEN Mars Orbiter, which has a total mission cost of around $672 million..

As I have often stated: India can make it…. And make it better!

I owe ISRO a big thank you for setting a new Quality & Reliability benchmark.

Benchmark ISRO for Quality & Reliability

No longer can we have an excuse that Quality is not in the Indian culture. To my mind, the significance of the MOM achievement is greater when you realize that it was achieved within our culture.

In order to succeed in the global markets, Indian industry now needs to benchmark ISRO. In particular, benchmark their Quality & Reliability practices.

All sectors can and should build Reliability into the design of their offerings; and produce / deliver the design with Quality. This principle is applicable to manufacturing, services, healthcare, and education; in the public and private sectors.

Commitment to Better than the Best

The ISRO TEAM has Quality & Reliability in their DNA. They also have a key soft skill in their DNA….teamwork. Teamwork that is free from personal agendas.

Teams function best when there is a “commitment” to a singular mission. The ISRO TEAM was committed to perform Better than the Best on the MOM mission.

MOM raises Alarms

MOM also raises thundering alarms.

I am alarmed to be informed that the Dalit Pride project and garden in UP had a budget of Rs 6.9 billion (MOM x 1.5).

I am even more alarmed that the proposed Statue of Unity in Gujarat has a budget of Rs 20.6 billion (MOM x 4.6).

There are many, many more.
