CAUSE: Quality of Education EFFECT: Quality of Life

Quality of Life - Qimpro

Quality of Education

Globally, the Quality of Life in a nation has a strong correlation with the Quality of Education.

Quality of Education is the Cause. Quality of Life is the Effect.

So how does one improve the Quality of Education? If one were to study the managerial practices of the top universities in the world, one is likely to discover some common characteristics:

  • Strong alumni bonding with the university
  • Integration of philanthropy for survival and success
  • Focus on Research & Development.

As understood, even the most private of the private universities, MIT, generates only 25% of its revenue budget through net fee (fee received minus scholarships disbursed). 50% comes from the government. And the balance 25% from earnings out of investments of endowments.

In recent years, India has commenced the journey for improving the Quality of Education. This is a reality.

Independently, big corporates have established new educational institutions, or supported existing established ones. The Tata Group. The Aditya Birla Group. The Mahindra Group. The Bajaj Group. And more.

Further, the government has created a framework for corporates to facilitate philanthropic support to education. Big corporates are mandated to contribute 2% towards CSR. In the national interest, much of this should be channelized to education. For Quality of Education.

Banasthali Vidyapith

A 121 years old university, Banasthali Vidyapith, Jaipur, has created history by being featured in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020. It is therefore one of the best 3-4% universities in the world!

Further, Banasthali Vidyapith has been ranked the second best Women’s University in the world. That is a sterling achievement.

As we are aware, Banasthali Vidyapith aims to blend spiritual values and scientific thought of the East and the West. The hallmarks of life at Banasthali are: Emphasis on Indian culture and thought; simple living; and khadi attire.

I have visited the Banasthali campus. I was amazed to see the rainbow of activities: spinning khadi yarn; fashion design for khadi materials; classical dance; classical music; horse riding; flying; AI research; etc etc etc. The simple-excellence demonstrated will be difficult to match.

Banasthali Vidyapith was founded by Pt. Hiralal Shastri and is currently shepherded by his descendent, Prof. Aditya Shastri, Vice Chancellor. Prof. Aditya Shastri is a Ph.D. from MIT, USA.

Who is the customer for Banasthali Vidyapith? Prof. Aditya Shastri has a precise answer: Society. In other words, focus on Quality of Life.

Random Thoughts

  1. In an organization, people are the only asset that appreciate in value. All others depreciate.
  2. Education without action is easily forgotten.
  3. Education with action is remembered.

  • Any Education to be considred as Quality Education, is only when it translates into Change of Behaviour. Societies can cliam to be progressing on a given aspect, based on how many people that it constitutes of, have moved from Ignorance to Awareness to Change of Behavior, on a day to day basis. Limiting education to Information providing and only Testing & Awarding for memory, instead of the Understaidnng and Application of concepts, is like running just half the distance..

  • Great thoughts in letter sir!
Many congratulations to Banasthali Vidyapith !!, an institution for women with 85 years of legacy … marching on its way to excellence… well into the 21st Century!!

  • Yes Mr Lulla you said it! Quality of Education impacts Quality of Life significantly. The results are there for us to see. Unfortunately, the focus at most educational institutions is still employability and not Society! Hope Institutions like Banasthali Vidyapeeth inspire change – change from a narrow employability focus to social upliftment.

  • Excellent! Your points 1,and 2-3 under random thoughts are worth two more blogs. India is moving ahead and embracing our age old values which were hard on living a good quality of life. The increasing awareness of age old practices, for example, Yog or Yoga as it is popularly known, are making people realize the true way of living. The quality of life revolution has begun, it is a matter of time before it gathers steam Would you agree…?

  • Whoa. On the spot.
The entire society’s overall education level needs to rise. That means both the top and bottom

The local primary, middle and high schools are as important as the top ones like IIT where some of us had the good fortune of attending.

  • Quality of education has a profound impact on quality of life. Parents have realized this fact and most of the savings of parents are invested in education of their children. However, this education should be holistic in nature comprising of not only algebra, biology, geography, etc etc. but also values, ethos, character building, care for larger ecosystem such as social infrastructure and environment. Banasthali Vidyapeeth is a great institute because it has maintained this balance.
