Qimpro 25: Indo-American Society Honours Dr J M Juran
In order to propagate the principles of the Juran Trilogy, the Indo-American Society (IAS) organized a series of Quality Management seminars from 1988. As the authorized Indian representative of the Juran Institute, I was the exclusive faculty for the Juran seminars. Some of these seminars were: Upper Management & Quality; Managing for Quality; Quality Improvement in Manufacturing, etc.
These Quality seminars were initially attended in modest numbers by leaders in manufacturing organizations. By 1990, over 300 executives had been exposed to the teachings of Dr J M Juran, the Quality Guru (in his lifetime he preferred not to be referred to as a guru).
The IAS had, in effect, performed its business-facilitator role with proficiency. The IAS had brought state-of-the-art Quality to India, through the works of Dr Juran. Qimpro owes it a big “Thank You”. 25 years would not have happened otherwise.
In 1990, the second Qimpro Convention was hosted in New Delhi. The IAS had by now been associated with Qimpro for 1000 days. It chose to honor Dr Juran at Qimpro Convention ‘90.
Mr. William Clark Jr., then U.S. Ambassador to India, graciously agreed to address the delegates and present a special memento on behalf of IAS to Frank Tedesco, Vice-President of Juran Institute, who was representing Dr Juran at this event.
Frank Tedesco, in his special address to the delegates said that Japan’s quality revolution was led by the top managers of the industry. In his opinion, the very first thing to do is to adopt the right tools. He felt that India was poised for a spectacular growth, given its vast natural and human resources.
The memento to Dr Juran was a Chola bronze of Nataraja which symbolizes perfection in art achieved by high quality craftsmanship.
Dr Juran conveyed his thanks with the following note:
