Change enables Constant

We have repeatedly heard from several management gurus that Change Is The Only Constant.

Is it WHAT to change? Or is it HOW to change for a constant WHAT? I believe most aspects in our lives are constant: schooling, eating, entertaining, dancing, marrying, working, and so on.

In my case, I continue to practice management consultancy for the past 40 years. That is WHAT I do. My profession is a constant. I believe a similar status would hold true in the case of most people.

On the other hand, HOW I practice my profession has constantly evolved / changed. From pre-IT to post-IT; from pre-social media to post social media. HOW is accelerating. And how!

In another context, when we benchmark for change management, our search focuses on performance metrics and not on managerial practices that help us achieve superior performance. WHAT does not get us to where we want to go. HOW does.
