Communicate with your heart and eyes. Observe Dr Devi Shetty

Last week, on Thursday 28 January, I had an extraordinary meeting with a most extraordinary human, Dr Devi Shetty, Chairman and Founder, Narayana Health, Bangalore. This was at the Panel of Judges meeting for the IMC Ramkrishna Bajaj National Quality Award & the IMC Juran Medal in Mumbai. As the winner of the IMC Juran Medal 2012, he honored the practice of chairing the panel for 2013.

To the surprise of the organizers Dr Shetty arrived ahead of time. I received a panic call to come immediately and invest time with the chairman of the panel. I was delighted to be gifted this exclusive time. One hour.

For the benefit of all leaders and managers I wish to share what I learned from the silence of Dr Shetty:

  • Awareness precedes change
  • Outer greatness is preceded by internal excellence
  • Self respect is a beautiful thing
  • Treat people with dignity
  • Connect to a compelling cause with your heart.

There were more lessons as he chaired the panel discussion:

  • How to listen? And listen more
  • How to facilitate participation?
  • How to clarify?
  • How to keep a discussion on track?
  • How to build consensus?

Most significantly, Dr Shetty demonstrated how one can communicate with one’s heart and eyes.

  • thank you Mr. Suresh Lulla, as always your blogs and articles are worth a while to spend time again and again. Though we were not present during the occasion but your words greatly summarizes and we too learn from it. thank you once again !

  • Dr. Devi Shetty sure is a great gentleman and noble human being. I’ve had the privilege of interacting with him on two or three occasions, and I must say, he is really well informed about matters well beyond his field of expertise. Now when I think of it, I find a lot of similarity between you and him when it comes to the kindness and clarity in communication.
